MY TWO CENTS

On Monday, I read a post written by someone shocked that a member of his church had committed sucide. This man was writing about what a dark place his friend must have been in. For years I've always read that suicide is about darkness and I've always thought that. But is it? I'm not an expert on the the subject but maybe suicide is just a matter of giving up because someone doesn't have anyone left that they can turn and ask for help?

Over the weekend I watched a new movie written and directed by Helen Hunt that was on LIFETIME televison network titled "Then She Found Me." This motion picture beings and ends with a Jewish riddle about a Father who encourages his young son standing on a stair to jump off the step and land into his arms. Every time the child did this the Father caught his young son and his young son felt LOVED. As the child was enouraged to move higher and higher up the steps. The Father would catch his young son. Until the the child reached the top step. Then the Father told his young son to jump and he did but only this time the Father didn't catch him and he landed on the ground and hurt himself. "Why didn't you catch me," the young son ask his Father? He explained to his young son that he also wanted him to experience life. The man pointed out that everytime the Father catches us we feel LOVED but it's the times when the Father doesn't catch us that we experience LIFE!

Granted life is full of both good and bad times. And it sure is nice when we do feel loved especially from our heavenly Father. But what happens when someone's life has more bad times than good? What happens when people realize that they have no one to catch them? When they have no family or friend that they can ask for help? Could that be the reason why twisted stinking thinking like suicide and murder creeps into the minds of even the best among us including the CFO of Freddie Mac. My condolences goes out to this man's family but let's not let this sad story get by us so quickly in this 24 hour news cycle.

When was the last time someone was brutally honest with you? Were you even listening?

Right now millions of people around the world have lost jobs, homes, their 401K's and they can't paid their bills much less put food on the table. Many have fallen that can't get up. Our food banks are in need of food and people are in need of work. Bills are being paid late and creditors are sending threating letters and telephone calls that are sending some folks over the edge.
s
Maybe it's time for our local & national television stations to start running free PSA ads with the telephone number for Suicide Prevention hotline. Maybe our churches and communities should be doing more than we are.
s
How many more men or women will take their own lives or that of their families before this nation wakes up to the fact that we have a problem on our hands created by this economy. Just ask the familes who lost loved ones killed by a young man recently fired by IBM inside a community Immigration center? Whose story is next and can we stop this madness?

Many are worried to the point of despair because they see no end in sight and they haven't anyone to turn to for help. For members of the Church it's our job to tell people about a FATHERS love. But when LIFE knocks someone down we must be more than just be a house of worship or place of prayer; lets be the GOOD Samaritan! Lets find ways to make a difference and stop looking at the crash site caused by lack of cash.
