Searching In All The Wrong Places

In the world today, we are seeing an increased interest in spiritual matters. The world is consumed with an insatiable hunger for something more and greater than their current existence. Every person is searching for that “thing”, to fill the need by any means necessary. In days of great upheaval and uncertainty, many are searching for the “cure” for what ails them and our societies. We are also seeing an exponential rise and invasion of paganism into every segment of society.

The media continues to serve as a battling ram as it tries to superimpose this belief system upon the masses. Influential media icon Oprah Winfrey is currently leading the charge in pursuit for inner peace and fulfillment by endorsing “A New World”, “The Secret”, and “The Seeker’s Guide”; which is impacting the lives of millions upon millions of people around the world. Paganism is described as the practice of a polytheistic religion (as in ancient Rome) and hedonistic pursuit of sensual pleasures in any form. Paganism, rooted in polytheism (the acceptance and worship of many gods and ideals), is the flavor of the day – even amongst some Christian believers!

This religious pursuit provides a counterfeit sense of spirituality; without the personal moral responsibilities that comes with following Christ. It also sets the groundwork for global stage for inclusion and tolerance for all. It is having spirituality on our own terms.

We see the reality of this in II Timothy 3:5-7. Having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. One of the many dangers of this pursuit is that there is no absolute foundational core of truth in what is believed or accepted. And, because many of them are subject to every wind and “new” doctrine that comes along, they cannot truly embrace truth.

The Secret of the Lord

Yet, God is issuing a clarion call to bring in His people unto Himself. As the Church is being infiltrated and influenced by the times, the Lord desires for His saints to come into His secret place. We must then set our hearts and minds to pursue the safety of His presence.

Psalms 25:14 declares The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant. The Hebraic meaning of the term, secret, is sod (sode); which means a session or company of persons in close deliberation. It also means by connotation, intimate consultation or counsel. The secret of the Lord involves close intimate interaction. We need the Lord’s counsel more than ever before. We are moving and advancing into both natural and spiritual realms and arenas that we never have before. We do not know the way to go, but we know the One who made the way.

The Lord is calling for His people to come into His bedchambers and to hear the sweet murmurs of His counsel. Jeremiah 23:18-23 in The Amplified Bible underscores His desire for us to press in to know His heart and will. For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord, that he should perceive and hear His word? Who has marked His word [noticing and observing and giving attention to it] and has [actually] heard it? Behold, the tempest of the Lord has gone forth in wrath, a whirling tempest; it shall whirl and burst upon the heads of the wicked. The anger of the Lord shall not turn back until He has executed and accomplished the thoughts and intents of His mind and heart.

In the latter days you shall consider and understand it perfectly. I did not send these [false] prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in My council, then they would have caused My people to hear My words, then they would have turned them [My people] from their evil way and from the evil of their doings. Am I a God at hand, says the Lord, and not a God afar off? God is still asking these questions – Who will stand in My counsel? And now that you have heard, who will obey My words?

As believers, we must truly come to place where we hold council with His counsel. We need the wisdom of God to overcome the world and its devices. Willfully ignoring His counsel opens us up to calamity and destruction. Without His direction, we may move beyond the hedge of His protection and are left to consequence of our actions. However, as believers, if we would set our hearts and ears to hear Him, then we can enjoy the benefits.

A Return To The Source

We are living in a day where the tingling gospels of self improvement and personal growth development are ringing throughout the earth – even in the church. There are many saints running to and fro seeking the latest and greatest of revelations and some of these messages have merit. However, not at the expense of someone’s spiritual destiny and eternal destination. Not at the expense of the inspired message of the birth, atoning death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ to a lost world. Not at the expense of denying our own innate need for Him. Jesus Christ is our one-stop Source of fulfillment.

We must humbly come back to the Source of Life itself and press in to know His heart towards us and Jeremiah 29:11 proclaims His intentions so well. For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. If He is the Master Builder and Creator, then we must go back to the true Source. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; Acts 17:28a. We must set our hearts to return again unto Him for the secrets of His mind and will.
